Hardwood Floor Care Guide

At SecureStep Flooring, we believe in service after the sale. Below are recommended guidelines to help you care for and protect your new hardwood flooring.

To protect your investment and keep your hardwood floors looking like new, establish a regular cleaning routine and maintenance program as outlined below.

The accumulation of dirt, sand, and grit can scratch and dull the finish of your hardwood flooring. Sweep, dust, or vacuum regularly using a hard floor attachment only — never use a beater bar. Avoid oil-based cleaners, waxes, polishes, or strong ammoniated or abrasive products. Do not wet mop or wash hardwood floors with soap, water, oil soaps, or liquid cleaners, as excessive moisture may cause swelling, warping, joint separation, or finish damage and may void your warranty. We recommend using a manufacturer-approved hardwood floor cleaner only.

Never use steel wool, scouring powders, or buffing machines. Spills should be blotted immediately using a soft, dry cloth. Stubborn spots such as candle wax or chewing gum may be removed by hardening the area with ice and gently scraping with a plastic edge (such as a credit card), taking care not to scratch the surface. Wipe clean with a lightly damp cloth.

In addition to routine cleaning, the use of quality entrance mats is strongly recommended to trap dirt, sand, and debris before it reaches your floors. Avoid rubber-backed or foam-backed mats, as these may discolor hardwood. Always use approved rug pads to prevent slipping.

To minimize dents and scratches, use felt floor protectors under furniture legs and wide-load bearing supports when moving heavy objects across the floor.
